The groupthink phenomenon proposed by Irving Janis (1982) is well known in disciplines such as political science, psychology and business. Janis recognized the need for future studies and of various group types. This study has three main purposes. The first is to determine whether or not Janis neglected to include the important variable of self-esteem. Does self-esteem play an important role in contributing to the groupthink phenomenon? The second is to determine the propensity for groupthink and self-esteem levels in private and public sector bureaucratic employees. Do public sector employees engage in groupthink more and do they have lower self-esteem than those in the private sector? The third is to determine if statistically significant differences exist between the private and public sector bureaucratic employees in regard to the employee's job security. Do public sector employees have a higher sense of job security?

The results of this study confirm that groupthink exists in both private and public sector bureaucratic environments at similar moderate levels. This study finds no significant correlation between groupthink and self-esteem. This confirms Janis's explanatory hypothesis, but calls into question some self-esteem literature. Additionally, the levels of groupthink, self-esteem and job security are not significantly different between private and public sector employees. However, there is a statistically significant correlation between self-esteem and the sense of job security.
