Almost all psychologists seek to limit and control the self-disclosures they make to their patients. Unintentional or haphazard disclosures are of particular concern, because of the relational and ethical problems they can cause. The Internet's rapid development and widespread use over the past decade has brought about new problems for psychologists trying to avoid inappropriate disclosures. The rise in popularity of social networking websites has made dealing with issues arising from the use of such sites by psychologists and their clients an important issue.

520 $a This article describes a survey of psychology graduate students and psychologists. The survey contained questions about current use of social networking websites, opinions on regulation of online activities by the APA, and interactions that have arisen in clinical work as a result of online activities.
520 $a Survey results revealed that 77% of the graduate students and psychologists who participated in the study currently maintain a page on a social networking website. Of those who maintain a site 85% report that they utilize a privacy setting for their page. Some of the online behaviors ranked as most ethical included posting photos of oneself or others online for private use, and maintaining a social networking website. Behaviors viewed as least ethical included searching for a client on a social networking site, and discussing online activities with clients. A negative correlation was identified between age and whether one maintains a social networking web page.
520 $a The study also showed that psychologists and graduate students would like to see the APA set guidelines for the use of social networking websites by psychologists. The preference for regulatory boards to become involved with these matters was slight, with the average response being a 3.2 on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 indicates a strong disagreement with APA involvement and a 5 indicates a strong preference for APA involvement. The standard deviation for this item was high (1.2) indicating that the opinions of psychologists differ markedly on this issue.
