Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1996.
This study had a two-fold purpose, one was to utilize The Behavioral Assessment of Pain Questionnaire (BAP) in lieu of the several instruments that are often required in combination to assess chronic pain patients based on a biopsychosocial model. The other purpose was to attempt to discover if there are culturally based differences between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white chronic pain patients. A review of the literature yields numerous studies that claim to have found such differences. Unfortunately, those findings are based upon assessment instruments that must be used in combinations to fully address the wide range of factors that influence chronic pain conditions.Subjects--Topical Terms:

There were a total of 56 patients in the study. The 25 members of one group in Austin, Texas had been admitted to the Pain Management Program at St. David's Hospital and were asked to volunteer to complete the BAP. The second group was comprised of 31 subjects in Guatemala City, Guatemala who were diagnosed as having a chronic pain condition and who were asked by their physicians to complete the instrument.

T-tests were performed on the data looking principally at nationality in relation to their mean scores on subscales of the BAP. Results from these measures found surprisingly few variables to be significantly different between the two groups. These results tend to be contrary to the findings of other similar studies cited in a review of the literature. The results do, however, by their consistency, lend support for the validity and usefulness of the BAP in assessing chronic pain for members of both cultures, while the few differences are interpretable as cultural differences.
