Ethnic individuals face a myriad of choices in terms of self-identification. The present study sought to discover the meaning of ethnic identity. Using Tajfel's (1981) Social Identity Theory as the conceptual framework, the present study tested a comprehensive model of ethnic identity development that considered both the background variables associated with ethnic identity and the attitudinal and behavioral outcomes related to ethnic identity via a questionnaire and a short interview. Subjects were 231 Pilipino students at UCLA. The background variables examined were gender, socioeconomic status, acculturation level, generational status, parental values, and year in college. The attitudinal and behavioral outcomes assessed were political orientation, adherence to traditional values, ethnicity of friends and romantic partners, and level of involvement in ethnically related activities. Generally, the results supported the proposed model of ethnic identity. Results indicated that different generational status, parental values, socioeconomic status, and acculturation levels were associated with different ethnic identity labels. Within acculturation level, which was conceptualized as a multidimensional in nature, past socialization experiences, language background, and ethnic loyalty to Pilipino culture were the most important dimensions. Considering the outcomes related to ethnic identity, persons adopting "very ethnic" identity labels also tended to have a political orientation supportive of affirming the Pilipino culture and ethnic issues. Those persons also surrounded themselves with ethnic friends and loved ones. Conversely, persons adopting "very Americanized" identity labels had political orientations that were very assimilationist in nature, and tended to have Anglo friends and romantic partners. Interestingly, regardless of ethnic identity label, most of the subjects adhered to traditional Pilipino values. Involvement in ethnic issues and activities was not found to be a variable differentially associated with ethnic identity label, however, most subjects said they lacked the time to be involved with campus activities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
