Thesis (M.S.E.E.)--University of Arkansas, 2008.
The increasing of the world energy consumption may not be fulfilled by the availability of fossil fuel in the next 100 years. An alternative solution to mitigate this problem is utilizations of renewable energy. In accordance to this issue, this thesis addresses a stand-alone photovoltaic system for residential application in the rural areas of Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The system consists of a PV array, a boost converter, an MPPT controller, a battery, an inverter, a power frequency transformer and the house loads. The elements of the systems were designed by adapting standard procedures from Sandia Laboratory to compromise between technical and economical requirements. Matlab/Simulink simulations were used to evaluate the performances of subsystem and also the entire system. The simulations for the subsystems validated that the subsystem models operated as designed. The overall system simulations were performed for a system with and without an output filter. The simulation results indicated a significant improvement in terms of the output voltage THD and rms value for the system with an output filter. The simulation results for irradiance or load changes also confirmed that the system performs well when there is a mismatch between the supplied power and the load demand.
