English proficiency testing at universities of technology in Taiwan is designed to match students' professional skills with their English ability, as well as integrating and elevating English learning with accreditation processes to pave the way for students' future employment. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which students of universities of technology in Taiwan are satisfied with English proficiency tests that the Ministry of Education or their school encourages them to take and to examine the participants' need for improving the tests. The sample for the research was comprised of 322 traditional education students and 230 continuing education students from Vanung University of Technology (VU). Among 552 surveys, 540 were usable for a return rate of 97.8%.Subjects--Topical Terms:

A 50-item survey developed by the investigator employed a five-point Likert scale format and was subjected to expert panel and pilot study scrutiny before distribution. Descriptive analyses, including mean and standard deviations, and inferential analyses, including t tests and one-way analyses of variance were computed. Results of data analysis were used to determine significant differences in the mean scores of respondents' perceptions of the expectation, teachers' help, employment, consistency, difficulty, fees, test centers, and policies and practice of the English proficiency testing based on their demographic characteristics.

The result showed that most participants believed attending the General English Proficiency Test (GEPT) is important for enhancing their own English ability and passing the tests can increase job security, advance in status, and is beneficial for employment. Most participants tended to agree that teachers help prepare them to pass the GEPT, and fees as well as policies and practices of the GEPT appear appropriate. Among the conclusions to emerge from the study was that participants took the test for their own benefit, not to meet the expectations of schools, teachers, or their parents. Other conclusions were that university students of technology do not express strong opinions regarding the GEPT and their demographic characteristics do not appear to influence their perceptions regarding English proficiency testing.
