This study investigated pilots' abilities to comply with 4-D clearances during taxi operations. A 4-D taxi clearance, in which a pilot is required to be at a specific location at a specific time, allows an aircraft to make an active runway crossing without slowing or stopping, enabling surface traffic to flow smoothly and efficiently. Pilots were asked to comply with 4-D taxi commands that were presented in 3 different formats: speed, time, and "both." They taxied with these formats across different route distances and with various commanded speeds and times. Analyses evaluated the accuracy and consistency with which pilots complied with the clearances. Display usage was also evaluated with an eye tracker. Results indicate that pilots were most accurate and more consistent when presented with both speed and time information. Pilots dwell patterns indicate that they used the speed and time information during different phases of taxiing.
