Aircraft ground navigation is a complex task and has become one of the limiting factors for the growing commercial aviation system. This study investigated potential electronic cockpit taxi map features designed to improve the throughput and safety of low-visibility taxi operations. The performance and preference of several map display features were examined. These factors included three-dimensional (3-D) perspective versus two-dimensional (2-D) planar map views, quantitative versus qualitative heading information, constant versus scaled aircraft icon sizes, and graphical route guidance. Usage of a pilot invoked North-up, overview map was also examined.

The results show little difference in performance between the 3-D and the 2-D maps, although the pilots expressed a clear preference for the 3D map. Results from this study also suggest that display appropriateness is dependent on the particular task at hand. For ground taxi navigational tasks, information displays that provide high levels of visual momentum may be particularly valuable.
