The present study sought to identify abnormalities in activation among several brain regions in patients with schizophrenia and healthy control participants in response to an attention task. Ten patients and 20 healthy control participants were studied. fMRI data was analyzed in multiple ways, including both ROI and voxel-wise approaches, with an emphasis on five regions previously found to be involved in attentional processing: anterior cingulate cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus. Across all regions studied, over-activation was seen in the brains of the schizophrenia group as compared to the healthy control group. While the control group showed notable associations in activation amongst the brain regions on an intra- and inter-hemisphere basis, the schizophrenia group showed fewer associations and those were largely right-hemisphere based. The findings are taken as evidence of abnormal activation patterns in the brains of persons with schizophrenia while attending.
