Radiofrequency (RF) power and Metabolic Stress Disinfection and Disinfestation (MSDD) are proposed as alternatives for the decontamination of pathogens and insects/mites in foods and agricultural products.

Radiofrequency power's purely energy-based physical process makes it an appealing alternative to chemical methods. RF's primary means of decontamination is the creation of thermal effects and volumetric heating. RF power's uniform electric field and high penetration depth produces a much more homogeneous and controllable heating than any conventional method.

In this project, a wide frequency range of RF power (300 kHz to 100 MHz) has been shown to effectively heat different commodities to lethal temperatures for contaminants while preserving the nutritional and chemical qualities of the host. Experimental results show RF power is able to induce more than 5 log-reductions of human pathogens in fruit juices, milk, processed foods, fishmeal, and wastewater; a complete control of harmful fungi and nematodes in soils; and a one-hundred-percent disinfestation of insects in paddy rice. Using lower frequencies (below 1 MHz) can greatly reduce the initial investment cost of a RF system (5 to 10 times of conventional systems) making it very appealing to the industry.

Metabolic Stress Disinfection and Disinfestation is a nonthermal and environmental friendly method. It is being studied as an alternative for thermal processing and Methyl Bromide fumigation. The physical phase of the process is a series of negative and positive pressure cycles (relative to the atmospheric pressure) to create an extremely low O2 and high CO2 environment that causes anoxia and cellular acidosis in aerobic organisms. The following chemical phase uses ethanol vapor, a natural antiseptic, to simultaneously enhance the physical effect and create the disinfection effect. MSDD experiments in vitro showed a one-hundred-percent control of bacterial and fungal growth in Petri-dishes; and in vivo experiments showed significant infection delay for more than 10 days in microbial inoculated table grapes/berries and 45 days in inoculated oranges.
