Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is extensively used in diagnostic radiology. The main mechanism of its ability to detect lesions is from the difference of relaxation times between normal and diseased tissues. This study's interest is the dependence of relaxation times on magnetic field strength, which in turn changes the contrast of images for the same imaging sequence. By knowing the relaxation times at different fields, one can design an efficient imaging methodology.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In this dissertation, we measure in vivo relaxation times of rat tissues and one tumor model between 0.064 Tesla and 4.85 Tesla, which covers most of the magnetic fields available for MRI. Error analysis of the derived parameters are performed. Proper imaging parameters are chosen to produce minimum error relaxation time. It is shown that T$\sb1$ increases with field while T$\sb2$ decreases with increasing field strength. The relationship between relaxation times and water content of tumor and its host tissue is also studied and compared with the fast exchange two site model. Image contrast and signal difference based on the data at different fields are then presented.

Two other tissue parameters, the diffusion coefficient and perfusion ratio, of rat brain are also measured at 4.85 Tesla. We show that optimal sequences with flow compensation and gradient-sensitization give good results in both parameter measurements. With higher signal-to-noise ratio and more accurate gradient setting, the error in both measurements can be further reduced.
