Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 1984.
This dissertation attempts to demonstrate the validity of two premises: (1) architecture is a culturally-coded artifact reflecting the attitudes and values of its builders; and (2) through a systematic empirical analysis, archaeologists can examine the behavioral interrelationship between a culture and its built environment. To support these theses, the dissertation presents an historiography of architectural studies in archaeology since 1750 and the technical and theoretical development in the fields of semiotics, behavior-environment studies, human geography and ethnography. These reviews seek to verify the first premise and introduce the creation of a new analytical model. The new model attempts to substantiate the second premise through a thorough test on the excavated material from the Aegean Early Bronze Age site of Myrtos, Crete.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In light of apparent incompleteness in traditional archaeological methods of studying architecture, alternative approaches to the study of behavior and built environment are examined. In this reassessment of traditional archaeological techniques and models, this dissertation follows recent trends in contemporary archaeology. The methods and theories of semiotics, behavior-environment studies, human geography, contemporary archaeology and ethnography provide guidelines for the construction of a new model for the analysis of architecture.

The proposed 11-step model consists of the interaction of four chains of analysis (architecture, behavior, ethnography, geography) and multivariate mathematical and graphic acids. Each analysis chain is a four-tiered hierarchy; each higher level is more abstract and less empirical than the preceding. Each chain begins with an almost totally empirical collection of 'elements' and ends with the most abstract level, 'cultural attitudes and values.' As the conclusions accumulate, the material of all four chains is synthesized in a logically verifiable manner.

The results of the test on the architectural and associated artifactural remains of Myrtos provide, with replicable certainty, a glimpse of the world view of the settlement's inhabitants. The results are more detailed and objectively verifiable than previous studies of this important site. Archaeologists can discover aspects of the behavior of ancient peoples through a systematic interdisciplinary study of what and how they built.
