It is argued that in the production process, labor mediates between humans and the environment. The level of development of the productive forces indicates the intensity that labor applies energy to a given space. Production relations influence the rate and direction of energy flows. Hence, energy is a fundamental component of a mode of production. The linkage between energy use in farming and the articulation of modes of production is made through the conceptualization of distinct agricultural production systems consisting of social relations and productive forces, the relationship to the state and access to natural resources.

During the precolonial period the land-extensive citemene agricultural production system could produce surpluses. Colonization brought mining enterprises and the need for labor. Expropriation of African land and economic attacks by the settler-colonial state created a migrant labor economy. A European agricultural production system was also established. Peasant semi-proletarianization in the context of poor agro-ecological potential proved contradictory. Human and livestock populations grew while agricultural productive forces stagnated. Relative overpopulation and environmental degradation in African reserves resulted. The alliance between European farmers and the colonial state, along with access to large tracts of high quality land and cheap labor led to the mechanization of settler production; labor inputs, however, remained high.

After independence came changes in state-peasant relations and industrialization of African production in high potential reserves. But the crisis of relative overpopulation remains acute where agricultural potential is low. Data indicates that money earned through wage labor is used to capitalize agriculture. This suggests that processes of agrarian differentiation are linked to political-economic and agro-ecological factors.

Changing social relations on settler farms has caused a rapid displacement of labor by capital at a time when national job creation is dangerously low. In the absence of significant land transfers, a contradictory distribution of agricultural energy resources will continue. New forms of uneven agricultural development are emerging.
