The natural history of a genetic counselor.
Delmont, Jaime Ann.
The natural history of a genetic counselor.
- 82 p.
Adviser: Caroline Lieber.
Thesis (M.S.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2008.
This study begins to examine why individuals leave or remain in the field of genetic counseling. In order to answer this question, graduates from the Joan H. Marks Human Genetics Program from 1990-2000 participated in an online survey to determine what they have done with their education and careers post graduation. This unique population includes individuals who are qualified to work as genetic counselors but are not necessarily still affiliated with the profession. Participants provided information about their demographics, employment history, continued education, professional activities, certification, and satisfaction and dissatisfaction with their careers in genetic counseling. Participants reported being dissatisfied with the opportunity for advancement and earning potential in genetic counseling and leaving the field because of lack of money and lack of professional growth. As the genetic counseling profession moves forward, it will become increasingly important to study attrition in order to develop retention strategies.
