This study is an investigation of Nellie McCaslin (1914-2005), a leader in the fields of creative drama and theatre for young audiences, whose career paralleled the growth of educational theatre in America. With few textbooks addressing the subject, without professional organizations or university programs to guide her, McCaslin (and a handful of other important pioneers), established a unique profession. In nineteen thirty-four, she taught her first drama classes at Goodrich Settlement House in Cleveland, Ohio and her work evolved from there over seven decades. The scope of her continuous work was as noteworthy as was its duration.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Her background not only included degrees in English, Theatre, and Educational Theatre but professional training and experience as an actor, and success as an essayist, author of textbooks and as a playwright for young audiences. Her work as an theatre educator included full and part time positions at Goodrich House in Ohio, Tudor Hall Academy in Indiana, National Teacher's College in Illinois, as well as Teacher's College, Mills College of Education and the Program in Educational Theatre at NYU in New York. She also was a professional administrator, establishing theatre programs at National and Mills Colleges and serving as Associate Dean in the Gallatin Division for Individualized Study at NYU.

Her active involvement in and commitment to the professional organizations of the fields of drama and education for children began in 1937 and extended over the succeeding decades of transformation of America's political life, theatre world and educational system. Consequently, the arc of her professional life reflects these changes and how they influenced her views and methods. Similarly, an assessment of her career provides an overview of the development of theatre activities for, with, and by young people from the early twentieth century and into the twenty-first. This study offers detailed insight into McCaslin's significant leadership within the fields of creative drama and theatre for young audiences.
