Developing mechanisms to increase physical activity levels among American youth is a significant public health objective. Incorporating physical activity within the school day has been suggested as a unique, effective alternative to traditional sports and exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine whether replacing classroom chairs with fitness balls (INT) for 3 months increased daily physical activity among 4th grade students compared to a control (CON) group. Seventy six (36 INT; age: 9.44 +/- 0.50 yrs); (40 CON; age: 9.48 +/- 0.51 yrs) students participated in the current study. Prior to the intervention and at 12 weeks, all research participants were assessed for daily physical activity (PA), body mass, stature and core strength. PA was measured for one week at baseline, weeks 4, 8 and 12 using MTI accelerometers. Minute-by-minute activity counts were uploaded to determine total daily PA, activity counts, and school day PA between 8:00am and 3:00pm. Core strength was assessed by the number of bent knee sit-ups that each child completed in one minute and time held in a plank. INT participants sat on fitness balls in place of classroom chairs for 12 weeks. Significant increases were found at week 8 for activity counts, and at 12 weeks for activity counts, school day PA and total daily PA suggesting that participants did indeed increase daily PA and potentially expend more energy when sitting on the fitness balls. Significant differences were found between CON and INT for plank time at 12 weeks, as well as a significant increase in plank time from baseline to 12 weeks for INT suggesting that improvements in core strength were achieved. Although longer duration and a larger sample size would be ideal, the cost and likeability of this intervention could be used in future programs to effectively increase physical activity.
