Thesis (Ph.D.)--Texas Woman's University, 2008.
There were three primary purposes for this study. First, this study described the lived experience of parents who have a premature infant in the NICU or have transitioned home with the infant in the past two years. Second, the role of social support via computer-mediated communication in the lives of parents who have a premature infant in the NICU and those parents who have brought the premature infant home from the NICU within the past two years was assessed. Finally, this study explored the resiliency in these parents' lives as they have experienced the NICU or have now come home with their premature infant.

Using a qualitative framework to capture the voices and stories of NICU mothers and fathers who are members of The March of Dimes, Share Your Story site, these stories were collected and analyzed through the use of phenomenological inquiry. In addition, a brief online survey was used as a second form of data collection to support the three purposes of this study.

Findings revealed a total of twenty-one salient themes that emerged from five sections of inquiry that were guided by the research questions. These sections included the following: (a) In the NICU, (b) Life at Home, (c) March of Dimes Online Social Support, (d) Perceived Forms of Support through Computer Mediated Communication, and (e) Parental Resiliency. All themes gave insight into the lived experiences of parents of premature infants. Of particular importance to the findings section in this study, is the affirmed role of social support in the lives of parents who have a premature infant. Results demonstrated that 89 percent (n=34) of parents indicated that they used on-line social support through the March of Dimes, Share Your Story site as a form of support in their lives.
