A Hospice Volunteer Needs Assessment questionnaire was mailed to the entire population of lay hospice volunteers of Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc. Of the 266 lay volunteers who were mailed questionnaires, 65.4% (n = 174) responded. Content areas of the needs assessment questionnaire consisted of training needs regarding: (1) philosophy; (2) patient-care; (3) contact with the patient's family; (4) non-patient care-related tasks; and (5) personal emotional and/or psychological well-being. Content validity was determined by an expert panel review. Reliability was tested by conducting a pilot study and using the Cronbach's alpha procedure on the pilot data to establish the degree of internal consistency. The Cronbach alpha coefficients calculated were: need for training =.965; level of need =.967; when needed =.972. Results of the study showed that the typical lay hospice volunteer in this study is female, an average of fifty years old, white, married, had a religious affiliation, was educated at the high school level, employed, financially stable, and had experienced the death of a loved one prior to their hospice training. Data indicated that the lay hospice volunteers have philosophical training needs at the advanced level, and training needs regarding non-patient care-related tasks at an introductory level, and were in need of training within the next year. Patient-care training needs, needs regarding contact with the patient's family, and needs regarding personal emotional and/or psychological well-being at both the introductory and advanced levels were needed within the next year. Based on the results, recommendations were made for the hospice administrative staff, lay hospice volunteers, health educators, methodology, and future research.Subjects--Topical Terms:
