This thesis is an exploration of a methodology of curation that is in sync with sustainable community development, a curatorial approach that nurtures interest, engagement, understanding, and appreciation for art by building community systems to sustain creative, artistic activity. It begins by historically and critically examining the role of the curator within the past systems formatting and displaying art. Using theories of sustainability, aesthetics, and leadership, this thesis argues that art can be used as a powerful mechanism for sustainable community development. It poses the premise that a curator who actively seeks to connect art objects and community, is likely to create a community that is more engaged, more critical and self aware, as well as more appreciative of art. This is a mutually necessary condition for creation of a sustainable local art scene, as well as nurturing or growing an active, diverse, cultural community.

520 $a The thesis is divided into four chapters, covering curatorial theory and history, sustainability theory and community development, ideas of a sustainable curatorial methodology, and case studies that examine practices employed in creating an arts organization and related exhibition, that are the basis of the development of this thesis. Chapter One, the introduction, examines the role of the curator in the community, historically and theoretically. Chapter Two presents the idea that the curator must operate with a mission, striving to connect meaning between art and the community. Chapter Three outlines a strategic plan for developing a sustainable curatorial methodology. Chapter Four is broken into two parts, examining case studies of the applied theory, discussing the application of these ideas in both the development of the organization, Ohio Valley Creative Energy, and the related exhibition, Glass, Trash, and Landfill Gas: The Story of Ohio Valley Creative Energy, making a succinct connection between the two. The thesis concludes by summarizing and reflecting upon the experiences that have shaped the ideas in developing a theory of sustainable curatorship, documenting and demonstrating the result of these practices, while also considering how this curatorial approach can be adapted specifically for different communities.
