Fear of crime and belief in urban folklore: An exploration of urban folklore and fear.
- 50 p.

Thesis (M.S.)--The University of Texas at Dallas, 2008.
Urban folklore is a phenomenon that has intrigued folklorists for decades. Folklorists and sociologists have addressed the truths and fallacies behind these legends, as well as the manner in which these rumors spread. Despite the vast amounts of research conducted on the topic, a large gap remains. Specifically, the influence urban folklore has on a fear of crime. Because fear of crime is an important issue, the topic must be explored. The researcher has theorized that a belief in these false stories results in a higher fear of crime. In order to address the question posed by the researcher, a survey titled the "Fear of Crime and Belief in Urban Folklore" was created. The survey was given to an undergraduate class of 74 at the University of Texas at Dallas in February of 2008. With a response rate of 96%, 71 students participated in the survey. Using the method of means comparison t tests, the results reveal interesting findings. Two of the four urban legends presented in the survey appear to influence fear levels in the students. Because the findings support the research hypothesis, more research must be conducted on the topic. Hopefully future research will expand what little research is presently available.
