Social service workers' job satisfaction is important to understand due to the far-reaching impact and uniqueness of this profession. Many citizens are dependent on social services, and workers often deal with difficult and/or emotional situations due to the nature of this work. This study investigates motivation and hygiene factors as defined by Herzberg, Mauser, & Snyderman, including urban versus rural location, which may influence job satisfaction among social service workers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Using survey data from 170 social service workers collected in 2002 and 2003, a regression analysis was used to identify predictors of job satisfaction. Findings suggest an association between high levels of variety and creativity and high levels of job satisfaction. This study also found a relationship between high levels of job satisfaction and positive perceptions of supervisors, a hygiene factor. No major differences were observed between rural and urban social service workers. These findings support Herzberg et al.'s theory.
