Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2007.
In this thesis I explore the understanding of freedom that can be found in the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), a French aristocrat who has been widely praised for his analysis of liberal democracy. He identifies "liberty and human dignity" as his one "cause." Yet he never seems to provide us with a systematic treatment, or even with his own concise definition, of liberty or freedom (I use these words as synonyms).

In response to this problem I argue that an analysis of freedom in Tocqueville is as much a textual analysis of Tocqueville's works as a conceptual analysis of freedom. I defend the hypothesis that an implicit but coherent understanding of freedom permeates Tocqueville's writings. Connecting "human liberty" to human "dignity," this conception of freedom can be captured by an extension of Gerald MacCallum's classic triadic analysis of liberty, which unpacks it in claims about an agent, obstacle, and goal.

Each of Tocqueville's references to particular freedoms refers to the removal of a particular obstacle or constraint to a particular goal given the nature of man as actualized in the circumstances. Of those circumstances the "social conditions" of aristocracy and democracy are the most important. Particular freedoms removing obstacles to goals detracting from human dignity are licentious. True liberty, in contrast, consists of those freedoms which remove constraints to a goal contributing to human dignity. Such human dignity, a state of human freedom, consists of experiencing the maximum amount of free or unconstrained will as it fits one's capacities, exercised in a way that does not undermine itself. To falsify my hypothesis we would merely have to find Tocqueville favoring freedom to pursue a goal he regards as detracting from this understanding of human dignity, or vice versa. Such a passage cannot be found in his writings.
