Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2007.
The history of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense is as convoluted as the ideology/philosophy they represent. They left a legacy to the Black community that went beyond the streets of Oakland, California---it permeated America. The BPP has a long, colorful, and complicated history. Because of its complexity, this thesis project will investigate why there is such an under appreciation for the organization.Subjects--Topical Terms:

It will also answer the question, why is the legacy of the Black Panther Party still haunted by criminal laden perceptions? In general, Black Panther history has focused on the organizations reputation of being militant, racist, sexist, and homophobic. These accusations have led to a panoply of misconceptions about the Party. Within this project the focus will be on retrieving the historical significance of the organization---this will allow one will to receive a nuanced portrait of its legacy. In essence, this thesis will give an overview of the BPP's beginnings, their ideological manifestations, gender dynamics, and the social consciousness they displayed while including the White and homosexual community in their fight for equality and socio-economic freedom.
