Service-learning is an educational tool which, if strategically implemented, can help universities achieve a balance between social responsiveness and academic work. This research study utilized a pre and posttest design to consider the motives, career decision-making, and preference for involvement of undergraduate psychology student volunteers. First, it was hypothesized that there would be a difference in motivation between the service-learning group and the control groups as assessed by the Volunteer Functions Inventory. Second, it was hypothesized that, after the completion of the project, there would be a difference between the service-learning and the control group in career efficacy as assessed by the Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy Scale. Third, it was hypothesized that there would be a positive change in preferences as assessed by the Community Service Involvement questionnaire for the service-learning group on pre and posttest analysis and that this change would not be reflected within the control group. Results suggest that service-learning has an effect upon the student volunteers' motivation for volunteer work.
