A comprehensive characterization of Old Kingdom settlement is difficult to glean from the hints of urbanism known from the few archaeological sites from this period that have been excavated. This study takes in the settlements associated with pyramid complexes of the Old Kingdom and the accompanying textual evidence to gain a clearer understanding of urbanism during the Pyramid Age. The notion of the pyramid town is based on clear textual references to distinct settlements that were generally named for the associated pyramid, afforded special privileges and protections, and were occupied for many generations (in some cases centuries). Archaeologists have found few physical remains to provide an understanding of these settlements, beyond a smattering of houses within pyramid temples and hints of much larger settlements that are lost to the floodplain.
