The study of mouth movements is a relatively unexplored area of American Sign Language (ASL). Mouth movements in ASL, are used with verb, adverb, and adjective signs or classifiers. To examine mouth movements, the researcher completed a linguistic microanalysis on nine stories that were shared by native ASL signers. All of the stories were glossed in ASL and transcribed from ASL, to English. A total of 1,688 mouth movements were counted. Four categories of mouth movements were identified: ASL mouth movements (n = 1004 or 59.48%), English roots (n=216 or 12.8%), onomatopoeia (n = 73 or 4.32%), and English mouth movements (n 395 or 23.4%). The inclusion of mouth movements in the study of ASL has strong implications for parents, teachers and interpreters in ASL/English home, school, and post secondary education settings.
