Thesis (M.S.)--University of South Alabama, 2007.
The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology which can relate the infants with birth defects with: (1) toxic chemical compound releases from the facilities and (2) pollution from land use activities, in and around Mobile and Baldwin Counties of the state of Alabama. Through a population-based registry of birth defects, infants diagnosed with anomalies during 1999-2004 were identified. Toxic chemical compound releases and land use associated activities were assumed to be the sources of pollution causing birth defects. Pollution caused by toxic chemical compounds and land use activities were expressed on a common basis using the Emergy concept. ArcView 3.3 is used for the graphical representation of the births defects and pollution expressed in terms of emergy units. Linear and non-linear regression models were developed using Matlab programming. These models showed a non-linear relationship between the infants with birth defects and pollution. The study was inconclusive and the results appear to be non supportive for the association between toxic chemical releases and birth defects. Further studies are needed to support and quantify the relationship between infants with birth defects and pollution.
