The Hawaiian goose or Nene (Branta sandvicensis) is an endangered species endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. The Nene has experienced a long population bottleneck, and nearly went extinct in 1950. The majority of the approximately 1300 wild individuals currently found in Hawai'i are descendent from less than 30 birds. We compared wild Nene breeding pairs' genetic variation obtained from pedigree and microsatellites with breeding success in two populations from the Island of Hawai'i. We found no correlation between pedigree inbreeding values and breeding success for both Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (HVNP) and Hakalau National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) populations. We detected no correlation between microsatellite values and breeding success for Hakalau NWR Nene, however we observed significant negative correlations between male's heterozygosity and the number of hatchlings and fledglings produced for HVNP Nene. These results indicate that there may be ongoing purging of deleterious alleles in process for the HVNP population.
