The realm of informal diplomacy--exchanges between citizens of different nations outside of official governmental institutional apparatus that seek to influence events or attitudes of other governments--is an increasingly important avenue of international relations in the modern age. Global contacts through business, trade, international organizations, scientific endeavors, social events, and athletic competitions bring people together in ways that can affect foreign policy. Within countries, people with unofficial connections to the government are often leaders in a nation's informal relations with the rest of the world. Anna Chen Chennault, the Chinese widow of General Claire Chennault--leader of the World War II Flying Tigers--is one such individual.

Mrs. Chennault established herself in the international aviation industry, in Republican party politics and in Washington and Asian social circles following her husband's death in 1958. She utilized her contacts on both sides of the Pacific to achieve informal diplomatic goals that coincided with American national policy: protecting "free" Asian nations from communism, expanding American influence in Asia, then later for building ties between Taiwan, China and the United States.

This dissertation uses Chennault's unique, multi-faceted career as a paradigm of American informal diplomacy in Asia during the post-World War II era. Her marriage, life, and emergence with General Chennault as leading voices (along with the China Lobby) against communism's spread in Asia, her transformation beyond an identity as Chennault's widow during the "October Surprise" incidents of the 1968 presidential campaign of Richard Nixon, her business, political, and social activities in the 1970s and '80s as representations of informal diplomacy, and the final reconciliation with mainland China and change of her focus to peaceful, productive relations between China and Taiwan are all important aspects of the dissertation.
