Examines the possibility of an integrated national information infrastructure for the United States and its uses for educational institutions and libraries, as well as financial issues and the government's role. Contains sample principal sets and definitions of key terms. Notes that the project was approved by the Governing Board of the National Research Council, whose members are drawn from the councils of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
