Thesis (M.S.)--Washington State University, 2024.
Coffee is one of most well known beverages in the world, and throughout the last century, coffee consumption has drastically increased, leading to tremendous amounts of coffee ground waste generation that eventually ends up in the landfills. Even though coffee is a natural cellulosic product that is biodegradable, with current consumption practices, much of the coffee grounds ends up at landfills unable to be decomposed correctly. A new application of using coffee ground waste, sustainable textile dyeing, is explored in this research, with the goal of diverting used coffee grounds from landfills and utilizing its beneficial functional properties. In the first part of the study, an experiment is carried out to examine the viability of coffee ground waste for textile dyeing, including examination of different coffee types, fabric types, and dyebath conditions. Second part involves development of a garment to illustrate the utility of coffee ground waste-dyed fabrics for wearable apparel. The findings showed that using coffee ground waste for textile dyeing has potential, providing a range of browns based on the regional location of the coffee bean cultivation.
