This thesis provides a conceptual framework regarding the notion of visuality in human and machine actors within the context of contemporary computational design research involving machine intelligence. It conceptualizes the notions of custom and artificial sense of order in machinic actors to denote a contrast with the notion of a natural sense of order as conceived by Ernst Gombrich. The study scrutinizes different visual cognition capacities provided by the probabilistic nature of learning agents in contrast to humans, specifically focusing on deep learning and generative adversarial networks. It aims to reframe and reinterpret the theory of architectural design in relation to aspects of rational/intuitive modes of decision-making, influence of subjective histories of actors on design processes, nature of computation and generative/probabilistic techniques. The major frame of reference in this thesis refers to interrelationships established between design intention and form with respect to information and representation. The theoretical discussion of the thesis is tested in experimental approaches taken with deep convolutional generative adversarial networks.

Bu tez, makine zekasini icine katan cagdas hesaplamali tasarim arastirmasi baglaminda, insan ve makine aktorlerde gorsel dusunceye iliskin kavramsal bir cerceve sunmaktadir. Ernst Gombrich'in kavramsallastirdigi dogal duzen algisinin karsitligi tarif etmek icin makine aktorlerdeki ozel ve yapay duzen algisini kavramsallastirir. Calisma, ozellikle derin ogrenme ve uretken cekismeli aglara odaklanarak, insanlarin aksine, ogrenen makine aktorlerin olasiliksal dogasi tarafindan saglanan farkli gorsel bilis kapasitelerini inceler. Arastirma, hesaplamali tasarim teorisini ussal/sezgisel karar verme modlari, icinde barindirdigi aktorlerin oznel gecmislerinin tasarim sureclerine etkisi, hesaplamanin dogasi ve uretken/olasiliga dayali tekniklerle ilgili olarak yeniden cercevelendirmeyi ve yeniden yorumlamayi amaclar. Bu tezdeki ana referans cercevesi, bilgi ve temsil acisindan tasarim niyeti ile form arasinda kurulan karsilikli iliskilere atifta bulunur. Tezin teorik tartismasi, derin evrisimli uretken cekismeli aglarla alinan deneysel yaklasimlarda test edilir.
