Thesis (Ph.D.)--Clarks Summit University and Baptist Bible Seminary, 2024.
This study provides a classical defense of the gender binary and its accompanying heteronormative sexual ethic by presenting higher-order evidence to override the intersex objection while maintaining a compassionate and redemptive approach toward people with intersex conditions. Contemporary LGBTQ+ apologists have shifted away from appealing to a fideistic line of reasoning to defend LGBTQ+ practices and toward relying on the intersex objection to argue for behavioral determinism. The intersex objection is a philosophical defeater implemented by LBTQ+ ideologs who present metaphysical intersex concepts as non-binary representations of human genders. This dissertation employs a classical and integrated approach to overriding the intersex objection with evidence from science and Scripture. In step one, an analysis of intersex in philosophy, science, and myth refutes the claim that intersex conditions are healthy manifestations of non-binary human genders. Furthermore, a careful review of Greco-Roman society demonstrates that paganism regularly deferred to intersex concepts in order to justify an array of non-heteronormative sexual activities. Meanwhile, actual people with intersex conditions were marginalized, exploited, or eliminated by the same ancient cultures that embraced intersex concepts. In step two, an exposition of Scripture reveals that all human beings are created by God, created in God's image, and created as either male or female. Grammatically, these three concepts are inseparable. Furthermore, these three biblical concepts are consistently presented to defend the gender binary as God's design for humanity. Historically, the early church not only recognized and defended sexual ethics that were founded on the human gender binary, but ancient Christians also modeled a compassionate and redemptive approach toward actual people with intersex conditions while rejecting intersex concepts. This dissertation concludes by demonstrating from Scripture and science that intersex accurately describes a human condition, not a human gender. As a result, the higher-order evidence presented to override the intersex objection provides rational justification for the contemporary church to recognize human gender as a binary and continue to establish sexual ethics based on God's design for humanity that is discoverable in both his world and his word.
