Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton Theological Seminary, 2024.
This dissertation explores the formative role of communal psalm-singing in shaping communities of empathetic solidarity. It claims that God is ministering in our midst, wanting to hear and respond to us; that God calls us into communities of faith built on relationships of mutuality and vulnerability; and that these communal relationships overflow into openness and care for those on the community's periphery. Chapter One examines John Calvin's attempt to introduce psalm-singing to the worshipping community of Geneva, amidst the backdrop of the Protestant Reformation and the backlash that Calvin received for welcoming French refugees to Geneva. Chapter Two explores three very different modern practices of psalm-singing from three very different worshipping communities to discern how three themes in Calvin's work resound in new contexts. Chapter Three reflects upon the two preceding chapters, employing the theological disciplines of liturgical theology, Christian education and spiritual formation, and biblical studies in order to move from the practice of psalm-singing to the prayerful way of life of a community of empathetic solidarity. Three facets of the way of life of communities of empathetic solidarity will emerge from this third chapter: 1) relationships with God of mutual vulnerability and faithfulness, 2) relationships with others in the community involving mutual edification through a variety of voices and experiences, 3) and an expansive circle of care and participation that holds a porous boundary between the community and those beyond the community. Chapter Four brings these three facets to life through the story of a small multicultural congregation striving to be an intercultural congregation in Louisville, KY. The conclusion offers liturgical, pedagogical and theological reflections on how to cultivate communities of empathetic solidarity.
