Scholars have generally argued that 4QInstruction and the Hodayot are more alike than either are to Sirach with respect to moral agency. Nevertheless, several recent publications suggest that Sirach might share more similarities with 4QInstruction and the Hodayot with respect to moral agency than previously thought. Accordingly, this study argues that recent studies tend to overemphasize differences amongst some Second Temple texts, while, at the same time, neglecting the similarities between them. This study employs comparative methodology to redescribe moral agency in Sirach, 4QInstruction, and the Hodayot, as well, as the relationship between these texts. Specifically, this study adopts the four stages of comparison-description, comparison, redescription, and rectification-as laid out by Jonathan Z. Smith. Thus, this study begins by describing the current views on moral agency in Sirach, 4QInstruction, and the Hodayot. Then, it juxtaposes these texts with the aim of redescribing moral agency in each respective text. Finally, it attempts to rectify the relationship between Sirach, 4QInstruction, and the Hodayot. In addition, this study shows that moral agency cannot be described in terms of categories such as moral agency being affirmed or denied. Such categories are helpful heuristically but cannot adequately describe the complexities of moral agency and how it is constructed. Rather, moral agency ought to be described in terms of degrees, shaped by various factors, such as knowledge and desire, that will either decrease or increase moral agency. In other words, one's capacity for moral agency is dynamic, not static.By comparing Sirach, 4QInstruction, and the Hodayot in terms of knowledge, desire, and the ability to act upon one's knowledge and desire, this study demonstrates that these three texts have more in common than initially thought. In some regards, Sirach and the Hodayot share more similarities than either does with 4QInstruction, while in other aspects, Sirach is more like 4QInstruction than the Hodayot. Alternatively, 4QInstruction and the Hodayot have more differences than one might imagine.
