The vast majority of scholarship on sexual violence in the Hebrew Bible focuses on female victims, and rightly so, as the majority of cases of sexual violence are against women. However, the lack of scholarship on incidents of sexual violence against men in the Hebrew Bible has left a blind spot in the study of sexual violence as a whole. This dissertation argues that not only does the Hebrew Bible contain explicit, implicit, and metaphorical male-on-male and female-on-male rape stories, reading these stories as narratives of sexual violence are key to understanding the surrounding narrative.While there are many examples of male victims of sexual violence throughout the Hebrew Bible, this dissertation will focus specifically on four incidents in within Genesis: Genesis 9, 19, 29, and 39. Noah, Lot, Jacob, and Joseph, the protagonists in each of these chapters, all experience some form of sexual victimization and all fail to fit into the mold of the "ideal rape victim" according to rape myths and scripts because of more than just their gender.
