Thesis (Ph.D.)--New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
The purpose of this research was to conduct a comprehensive study of the Codex Petropolitanus. The hypothesis was that a comprehensive study of Π would demonstrate that the text of 041 represents an early form of the Byzantine text that was formatted and written for church use. The codicological, paratextual, scribal practices, and textual characteristics were examined to explore additional features of the Codex. The hypothesis was not supported by the findings made during the research. Even though the results strongly support that the Codex Petropolitanus was intended, formatted, and written for church use, the quantitative analysis (QA) provided solid evidence that 041 text type follows an early form of the Byzantine stream. The codicological study documented significant wear and tear of the codex material. The Gospel of Matthew features numerous reinked folios, suggesting an interest in preserving the MS. The overall consistency of the codex structure is interrupted by the intriguing insertion of eight bifolios (203r-210v) in the Gospel of Luke, all containing twenty-two lines within the same ruling system. The anomaly implies that a quaternion with an extra marked line was mistakenly incorporated into the codex. The analysis of the paratextual features revealed the presence of abundant aids for the reader. The use of ekthesis, abundant lectionary notes (especially in Matthew), κεφαλαια and τιτλοι, and the Eusebian Canons section numbers demonstrates that the Codex was formatted for public reading. The examination of the scribe's practices demonstrated an irregular use of nomina sacra and diaeresis, suggesting that the scribe of 041 possibly lacked theological understanding and a consistent writing style. The fact that 42.85% of the total singular readings consisted of orthographic errors and nonsense readings supports this conclusion. As mentioned earlier, the QA strongly confirmed that the text of 041 adheres to the early Byzantine tradition.
