In this dissertation, I argue that mystery plays an essential role in understanding what Scripture reveals about God's relationship to change. In response to biblical teaching about God's relationship to change, theologians develop models of divine immutability. Though models of immutability frequently capture some element of the relevant biblical teaching, individual models of immutability fall short of capturing the full reality of God's relationship to change. In chapter 1, I introduce the biblical and theological bases of the research question. In chapter 2, I argue that mystery has a place in theology due to the nature of God. However, not all appeals to mystery are equally legitimate. Accordingly, in chapter 3 I begin considering the proper place of mystery in theology. In chapter 3, I contend that mystery exists at the level of theological models as individual models imply ideas not accepted by the proponents of the model. In chapter 4, I propose that mystery also exists within models. Specifically, mystery accompanies theological affirmations. Finally, in chapter 5, I state the proper place of mystery in{A0}theology and draw implications of the place of mystery in theology for theology as a field of inquiry.
