Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kwara State University (Nigeria), 2023.
Jamacatu-t-Tabligh, as a Dacwah movement, is unique both in mode of operation and educational approach. The uniqueness of its educational approach is the six points and the compendium text that form the crux of all the six points and activities of the movement. This six points is known as Dacwah curriculum and the compendium text refers to as Fada'il-e-Acmal. Fada'il-e-Acmal, the main text and an inspirational book of the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh, is a combination of eight independent books on various topics in Islam. However, it has been the center of criticism and allegations leveled against the effort of the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh both locally and internationally. This thesis therefore attempts to examine the impacts of the book, Fada'il-e-Acmal on the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh in Yorubaland. Equally, the life of Zakariyyah, the author of Faḍa'ilu'l-Acmal and his other literary works were assessed pari passu other scholars' views; critics and admirers. The research employed historical, descriptive and field work methods. Historical method was adopted in the discussion of the biography of the author. The overview of the book was achieved through descriptive method while field work was employed in the discussion of impacts of Fada'il-e-Acmal on the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh in Yorubaland. The major findings of this study include that Zakariyya was a Sufi-orientated scholar who was influenced by the environment he lived in and whose Sufism activities and tendency were balanced with Sunnah understanding. It also established the fact that the content and contextual value of Fada'il-e-Acmal is fundamental to the spread and growth of Jamacatu-t-Tabligh in Nigeria generally and Yorubaland specifically. Equally, the research revealed that the book is given preference over other Islamic books after the Qur'an because it holds an importance position for the Taclim session of individual for the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh. That the book was authored on the request of some elders of the movement and that the book has productively impacted on the members and non-members of the Jamacatu-t-Tabligh in Yorubaland. It also revealed that the criticism against the book is a mere distortion and misinterpretation of the contents of the author. Lastly, it revealed that the weak Aḥadith and unverified stories found in the book are based on the authorial intent; to cultivate in the Muslim the culture of devotion and dedication to the commandments and wills of Allah. The study concluded by recommending that there is need for a re-examination of positions and conclusions on some issues discussed in the Fada'il-e-Acmal that are seemingly erroneous to the critics by making a painstaking study on such issues for new stand and clarity. The contribution to knowledge of this study is that Fada'il-e-Acmal is an inspirational book which trains the responsiveness of Muslims to building their attitude to life and ethical values of Islam. It also contributed to knowledge by criticizing the book and call for a further study on the weak and baseless narrations in it.
