Thesis (Ph.D.)--Asbury Theological Seminary, 2023.
This dissertation seeks to accomplish three tasks. First, it endeavors to provide a general history of the "divine mortal" in Greco-Roman antiquity. From the time of Greek pre-history to the early 2nd century (and beyond), the divine mortal was omnipresent. Therefore, it was a phenomenon which invariably shaped the worldview and symbolic universe of any ancient person, including the readers/auditors of the NT. Second, we shall develop a critical lens through which to attempt a comparative Christology. There are essential aspects of any divine mortal. For example, taking primacy among these attributes are acts of salvific beneficence. Time and again, hymns and prayers were directed at divine rulers and salvific heroes for this beneficence, which was nothing less than superhuman. Such qualities comprised the persona of the divine mortal and are what made this manifestation of divinity precious to mere humans. Finally, we shall apply this critical lens to a biblical text, in this case, the book of Revelation. We will show that throughout the book, Christ is depicted as hero, king, world ruler, savior, and as God (all manifestations of the divine mortal). While the OT backgrounds do serve as the basis for these portrayals, their intelligibility as facets of the Greco-Roman symbolic universe should not go underappreciated. As we shall note, where there is intelligibility, there is intentionality. Therefore, it is our thesis that the Greco Roman divine mortal must be viewed as an antecedent for the portrayal of Christ in Revelation. Christ is for John, true hero, true ruler, and true God.
