Thesis (Ph.D.)--Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.
The purpose of this dissertation is to confirm that the disabled are God's creations. In this context, this study maintains that there should be no discrimination, in particular, discrimination against people with disabilities who are created by God. To do this, this dissertation investigates what the Bible teaches regarding the disability and the disabled from the perspective of Biblical theology.Contrary to one's expectations, the Bible, throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, is full of positive descriptions in regard to the disabled. In the Old Testament, above all, the examination of God's Creation of the world and human beings in Genesis, Chapter 2 clarifies that there is no discrimination between the abled and the disabled, and that God created man/woman as a whole person or holistic being. Furthermore, the comparison of the teachings on the disabled in the Law with those in the Prophet discloses that the Biblical understanding of disability continues to develop. In addition, in the process of translating the Korean Bible, the expression including terms referring to the disabled has been refined over time and has been changed into an inclusive language. And it must be mentioned in passing that the Korean disabled Christians advised the Bible translators to make the Korean Bible more disabled-friendly version, and thus demonstrated the potential of joint ministry of the abled and disabled even in the specialized areas such as Bible translation. In the New Testament, the focus was on the conversion of the Jewish understanding of the disabled from the legalistic perspective to the comprehensive perspective of God. In{A0}particular, the healing ministry of Jesus Christ in the Gospel of John, Chapter 9 indicates that the disabled are not merely the object, but the subject of God's ministry. Therefore, this dissertation emphasizes that the church should take the lead in spreading the gospel and expanding the kingdom of God, and accompany the disabled, rather than treating them as the marginalized and/or minority.
