Thesis (Ph.D.)--Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2023.

This dissertation proposes that New Testament authors created characters with specific rhetorical purposes and presents several characters from the book of Luke as examples. New Testament characters, human or parabolic, serve literary functions. The authors depict their characters as historical individuals with distinct thoughts, motives, and emotions but also present them in a way that advances their plots and achieves their literary objectives. Therefore, characterization in the New Testament is inherently rhetorical. Luke is particularly concerned with writing a persuasive Gospel, and he builds characters that highlight his theme of reversal.
