Thesis (Ph.D.)--Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, 2023.
Christian Education is centered around meaning making; however, it is no longer the only site where this is happening. Fandom and geek culture are major forces in today's society, with both social and economic impact. Fan culture is also an important site of meaning making for those who participate, providing a site for developing answers to key questions of identity and values.{A0}Using the model of Participatory Culture to analyze the methods at work in fandom, specifically the post-Disney acquisition Star Wars universe, specific digital artefacts will be examined as examples of these meaning-making activities. These meaning-making activities, which are naturally occurring in fandom space, suggest methods and approaches to religious education, especially with regard to participation, community formation, mentorship, ownership of the texts, interpretation, and inclusion. These best practices of fandom provide a model for approaching Christian education, especially when building on the strengths of participatory culture in combination with the priorities of emancipatory pedagogy. This approach is not reliant on any particular fandom, but rather uses the principles found in geek culture to assist educators in bringing a participatory approach of mutual meaning making to the Jesus fandom.
