The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of transgender parents who had understood themselves to be transgender before having children, thus creating space to specifically pay attention to the internal experience of the parent and the intersection of their gender and parental identities. A limited sample of four participants were recruited to allow for in-depth exploration of data in the form of narratives taken from qualitative semi-structured interviews. Interviews focused on topics of early family experiences and gender identity development, the participant's experience of conceiving and raising their children, and how this may (or may not) have intersected with their experiences as a transgender individual, as well as aspects of the participant's experience of being a transgender parent in their greater communities. All interviews were transcribed and Carol Gilligan's Feminist Listening Guide (2015), was utilized to identify individual and common themes among each participant's narrative. These revealed the ways in which mirroring and recognition play an important role in gender identity development and future-planning and how a lack of adequate mirroring objects can influence one's internal sense of self, and specifically, one's sense of self as a parent. Implications for clinical work with transgender individuals and parents, as well as limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
