Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northwestern University, 2024.
Clothing possesses a unique persuasive power to communicate social and national belonging during moments of political upheaval, yet it is rarely taken up as a matter of serious rhetorical inquiry. I propose that a historical rhetorical analysis, not only of the clothes people wore but also the ways they talked about them, can help us understand how state power functions across time. From the start of the French Revolution in 1789 until the beginning of Napoleon's reign, state actors and citizens alike deployed a variety of competing rhetorical strategies in their attempts to regenerate the social fabric of the nation through clothing. What then might a rhetorical examination of discourse about clothing during the French Revolution reveal about larger changes in the people's understanding of state power during that period? To answer this question, my dissertation looks at themes that emerged in the clothing rhetoric of the French Revolution: the moral concerns expressed by philosophers, the political concerns of lawmakers, the aesthetic concerns of artists and government representatives, and the medical concerns of doctors and citizens. Examining revolutionary-era laws, meeting minutes, journals, medical treatises, arrest records, and pamphlets, I offer a rhetorical analysis of the political, aesthetic, and medical arguments about the state of dress of the French people. Through this analysis, I demonstrate that the changing rhetorical strategies used by revolutionary clothing reformers- including definitional shifts and conflicting appeals to reason-metaphorically reflect an important transformation in the public perception of the body politic: from monarchical subjects into the embodiment of the state itself.
