Demand for locally grown lettuce in the state of Iowa continues to be unmet, providing an economic opportunity for Iowa specialty crop growers to expand into the market. However, growing lettuce in the state of Iowa comes with its challenges, as wet springs, high-temperature summers, and cold fall frost events are all threats to the quality and yields of the crop. Iowa growers seek research-based information on high-performing cultivars and types for various growing conditions and seasons. New technologies, such as chemical priming for frost protection and production systems like high tunnels, all have the potential to be tools to create resilient systems in the changing climate. Research needs to evaluate these production systems and technologies for lettuce production systems.{A0}The overall goal of the research in this thesis was to provide growers with research-based information on 1) Cultivar and type recommendations across the growing season, 2) Quality parameters and nutrient content of lettuce cultivars in Iowa systems, 3) Evaluate stress protectants for quality and freeze tolerance performance, and 4) Assess the effectiveness of current and new production systems.{A0}A spring high tunnel production study (Chapter 2) was conducted to assess the performance of cultivars from five different popular lettuce types. Nutritional content and overall practicality of high tunnel technology for spring lettuce production in Iowa were considered. Overall, spring cultivars that were selected as high performers included: Cegolaine (Butterhead Bibb), Skyphos (Butterhead Boston), Coastal Star (Romaine), Red Oakleaf (Salanova{phono}{mlrhring}), and Muir (Summer Crisp). Nutritional concentrations were highest in the Salanova{phono}{mlrhring} type. Overall, high tunnels provided protection from unpredictable Iowa spring weather, allowing the growth of high-quality lettuce to be possible with an understanding of this controlled growing environment.{A0}Wet spring conditions often delay crop planting, forcing the extension of the spring growing season into the summer months for some cool-season crops like lettuce. High summer temperatures can cause bolting, which makes lettuce bitter and unmarketable. A second study (Chapter 3) was conducted to assess the performance of the same five popular lettuce types for extension into the summer. Nutritional content was also analyzed for differences in quality between types with high temperatures. High-performing lettuce cultivars for summer extension were selected as follows: Cegolaine (Butterhead Bibb), Nancy (Butterhead Boston), Aerostar (Romaine), Green Batavia (Salanvoa{phono}{mlrhring}), and Magenta (Summer Crisp). Salanova{phono}{mlrhring} had the highest nutrient concentrations in the summer months. Overall, this study highlighted the importance of future breeding and research on possible summer cultivars, as heat will continue to be a challenge for lettuce producers.{A0}Frost protection continues to be a consideration in the future as erratic weather conditions put lettuce and other specialty crops at risk of freeze damage and economic losses. The last study (Chapter 4) of this research analyzed the use of stress protectants ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, and calcium chloride as a chemical primer before a freeze event for frost protection of butterhead lettuce in the field. Research showed frost protection from stress protectants in both lab-simulated freezes and after a natural field freeze event with high quality among treatments. This research has expanded our scientific knowledge and understanding of the applicability of stress protectants for frost protection in the field.{A0}{A0}This thesis expands our scientific knowledge while providing practical science-based strategies and cultivar recommendations for specialty crop growers to continue growing or expand into lettuce production.{A0}
