Thesis (D.N.P.)--University of Massachusetts Global, 2024.
Depression is a prevailing and restricting condition in older persons more than 60 years, which raises the risk of mortality, increases costs, and jeopardizes quality of life (QOL). Despite the effectiveness of first line treatments, exercise therapy treatment also exists in reducing symptoms, but no study mentioned walking exercise as a specific program to improve depression. The phone app-monitored walking exercise is a promising treatment for reducing symptoms. Therefore, this quantitative study aimed to determine the effects of using a phone app-monitored walking exercise app (Map My Walk) to reduce symptoms of depression in a convenience sample of thirty adults who met the inclusion criteria. The phone-monitored application enhanced exercise participation, tracking and recording distance covered. The study population comprised adults aged 55-75 diagnosed with depression. Questionnaires and emails helped to collect their demographic information. Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) assisted in collecting depression scores before intervention and after intervention. A paired sample t-test, the statistical method that compared symptoms of depression before and after intervention, resulted into (t (29) = 15.75, p < .001), determined from statistical package for social sciences SPSS) software. The results showed more motivation to engage in exercise activities, which reduced symptoms of depression after the study. Therefore, using the app-monitored walking intervention reduced depression by 10% among elderly patients aged 55-75 on the Patient Health questionnaire within four weeks.
