Thesis (D.P.T.)--Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University, 2024.
Background: There are new graduates in the healthcare field that are in pursuit of their first job every day. However, the field of physical therapy lacks research regarding new graduate physical therapists (PTs) job seeking strategies and its correlation with job satisfaction. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the activities, behaviors, and methods that newly employed physical therapy graduates participated in to prepare for getting their first job and how these behaviors relate to job satisfaction. Methods: An online survey link (15 questions) via RedCap was emailed to 2023 new graduates of Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs in Louisiana to gauge how these graduates pursued and obtained their first job as a physical therapist. Results: 50% of new DPT grads found their first job by completing a clinical rotation at the site. The activity deemed most helpful in receiving their job was completing a clinical rotation at the site (55.6%). The most successful contract negotiation was salary/bonus (88.2%). 47.2% of respondents were very satisfied with their current jobs. Those that were dissatisfied selected work environment or work-life balance as the cause. Discussion/Conclusions: The majority (55.6%) of new graduate PTs in Louisiana report completing a clinical rotation at the site was the most impactful. 86.1% of these graduates are either very satisfied or satisfied with their current job. The respondents who are unsatisfied or very unsatisfied largely report that it is due to poor work environment or poor work-life balance.
