Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Cincinnati, 2000.
The purpose of this thesis is to rediscover piano works of Cecile Chaminade (1857-1944) by means of descriptive analysis. Chaminade's approximately 200 piano works have been neglected both by historians and performers, even though she enjoyed great success during her lifetime. This is partly because of her conservative compositional style during the post-Romantic period in France in the early twentieth century. However, her gender also affected criticism of her works as nothing but light salon music. Her piano works include a concerto, etudes, character pieces, and a sonata, many of which need virtuosic technique. The discussion in this context is based on an analysis of her larger piano works, in conjunction with biographical research of the composer. The context includes an introduction and four chapters. The introduction contains the purpose of the study, historical background of the composer's evaluation, and a survey of previous research. Chapter I gives a biographical sketch of the composer, including her life, musical influences, and general evaluation of her compositional style. Chapter II discusses various styles of Chaminade's piano works, including both her character pieces and larger works. Chapter III presents detailed analyses of three works: Sonata, Op. 21, Six Etudes de concert, Op. 35, and Concertstuck, Op. 40. The discussion reveals how Chaminade incorporates various musical traditions in her use of formal structures, key schemes, harmonies, and rhythms. Suggestions for performance are also provided to help the reader's understanding of each work in Chapter III. Chapter IV includes a summary of the discussion and an evaluation of Chaminade's historical significance as a composer of piano music. An appendix lists Chaminade's published piano works.
