The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates that every disabled student must receive a free and appropriate public education meeting the standards of their state's educational agency. Autistic students receive tailored accommodations and goals under IDEA through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) developed by their caregivers and special education team members. Little is known regarding the manifestation of arts education in autistic students' special education, despite considerable evidence demonstrating benefits of multiple arts education disciplines on a range of developmental domains. The following thesis characterizes parents of autistic children's perception of arts education and the implementation of arts education in autistic children's IEPs. Parents (N=28) of autistic students aged 3-22 years in the state of Massachusetts submitted their child's IEP and completed an online survey describing their family characteristics, satisfaction with the IEP process and arts education access, and the social responsiveness symptoms of their child. IEPs were coded for evidence of access to arts education, student interest in the arts, and use of arts to support other areas of learning or development. Findings suggest that arts education access does not meet policy standards, despite parents' belief that the arts are a valuable area of learning. Recommendations for future research, policy, and practice are described.
